mike ash returns to super rhythm trax after providing the very first release and gives us 4 authentic and acidic warehouse smashers. mike ash may be familiar from early releases on moving shadow and rising high records under a variety of pseudonyms in the early 90s but in the last 10 years has become synonymous with releasing mind blowing and true electro under his own name. when he turns his hand to acid house, the results mirror the high quality and his no nonsense approach shines through having lived and breathed the music and culture back when it was exploding in the late 80s and early 90s. in his own words i tried to keep with the original 1988/1989 vibe. i didnt use any synths / sounds / samples that weren t available past 1990. its all juno / sh-101 / 303 / jupiter / 808 / 909 / 707 / 606 and samples from the beats breaks & scratches vol 1&2inch the tracks exude a raw and strangled soul and are a bold and comfortingly honest take on the warehouse and pirate radio sound of the uk.

the motech label has been building a high reputation of late but it’s actually been three years since co-owner, detroit’s dj 3000 (franki juncaj) released a 12 inch of his own. putting that to rights, he delivers take me away, due for release in april and featuring a deadly remix by truncate. the original version of take me away is a deep and hypnotic builder with a relentless groove that stands astride detroit techno and tough house, a style that dj 3000 has championed over the years. truncate is the alias of audio injection (la’s david flores). his remix ups the tempo and adds an infectious vocal cut-up, turning take me away into a raw, hard-hitting cut. the truncate remix has already been picked up by eats everything for his new fabric mix, out soon, as well as receiving early support from dave clarke on his white noise radio show and ben sims on the october edition of run it red.

james k is a stranger to obviousness. over the past few years the new york native has quietly honed her sound and peculiar aesthetic. equally organic and electronic, her sound is a combination of odd dreams, industrial beats and vocals, both incomprehensible and appealing, with a thick layer of glitter on top of it. james k is a concentrated dose of emotion mixed with sorrowful iciness, which in turn ties together ripped, broken, morphed and enchanted samples. james k stands for a fusion of visual and sonic elements, deeply rooted in conscious art practice and downright freak-out. james k creates a mythology of her own. pet, her first lp due out in early 2016, will be a co-release with dial and her own label, she rocks!

after waiting for three years, jenifa mayanja has finally unleashed her new ep on swiss imprint deepartsounds the new ep features three original songs and a trinidadian deep remix of the song human nature. all tracks are well arranged that bound along with a smooth swathe of jazzy chords and pads over a technoid bassline. the songs take you on a space journey as a variety of cool beats and melodies creating a depth that is difficult to resist. once again jenifa delivers top quality, an attribute what makes her to one of the best female deep house producer

sami baha is a young producer from istanbul, with his roots in the turkish hiphop scene, who has been stealthily pricking up ears with guest spots on rinse fm and nts since he moved to london last year. he started this ep ‘mavericks’ while he was in istanbul, saying “the music i produced became more chaotic as istanbul became a harsher place both politically and economically. i didn t really design it that way, but i feel like the sound got more aggressive over the years”. he describes his music as ‘instrumental trap‘, but instead of trap vocals there are complex arrangements, although he has started to work with vocalists while he’s been in the uk.

seems like somethings going on across the pond at the moment with seemingly blossoming, or at least rejuvenated scenes in the united states and canada. our last handful of releases on freerange have included artists from montreal, tujuana, pittsburgh and chicago and were about to add los angeles to the list with this new one from justin jay and ulf bonde. the young producers have been steadily building steam with a number of fine releases the last couple of years and we welcome them to freerange for their debut ep entitled indecision. the title track sets the mood with a low-slung, super-deep house groove complete with an intimate vocal and a charming simplicity which contributes to the powerful end result. elements come into focus then disappear in a fog of reverb whilst playful guitar picks add a live jammed feel to the loping groove giving things a bob moses/francis harris kind of vibe

manchester s rainy city music continues to celebrate 20 years of the record label in 2016 and continue the success of the last two vinyl releases by dele sosimi afrobeat orchestra, via their own label and also with berlin s innervisions label. the 20 year celebration is also riding high on the current huge success of the re-issue of their second ever release from 1996 by city people it s all in the groove , now available again by the hugely popular artist motor city drum emsemble. this new release by artists irfan rainy & rex leon is a 4 trk ep from their digi lp titled cross step drag, a reference to the house dance culture from new york city. the four tracks released here highlight the huge variety in styles of house music created by the mancunian duo. the a side s track one vodun is simply voodoo / tribal house music for lovers of the old school jovonn sound. track 2 smash the silence is a brand new version of previous digital only release where afrobeat & house music are combined. it features the rasping vocals of lagos based nigerian actress vera e and the definite influence of fela kuti. flip to the b side and get to the deep dark twisted underworld of black america via snoop story (ode to the wire) and you hear one of the moodiest dance records you will ever hear and a tragic story of snoop, one of the wire s best performers from the cult tv series. the final track on the ep manc union dub is a dub house groove where ghostly brazilian candomble vibes meet the electronic dub beats of rhythm and sound. rounding off a hugely varied four track sampler receiving support from a huge cross sections of djs including danny krivit, at jazz, rahaan, kai alce, mad mats, osunlade, karizma, severino (horse meat disco), dj spinna & marcellus pittman.

gari romalis and lello di franco - dreamin for the uninitiated, our man gary romalis is the unsung master of detroit’s house and techno scene. having djed across the motor city’s top venues for the last three decades, gary is somewhat of a seminal figure for many of detroit’s djs currently at the forefront. following a slew of high quality releases on various labels over the past few years, gary now unleashes that special flavour on us for skylax 142! he is not alone though. with him, he brings all round italian partymaker, and top selector in his own right, lello di franco. let me tell you, this duo’s collaboration is something to behold. throughout all 3 tracks on the record, gary and lello maintain the essence of what the detroit underground is all about, stripped back tracks with soul that never feel like they go ‘big’ for the sake of it. while dreamin (wanda mix) may be packing a big kick and power clap combo, it’s the elegantly filtered, jazzy sample that will leave you wishing that the track lasted forever. the vibe takes a dip right into the deep in detroit underground (beat dat mix). spacious pad synths alongside a mesmeric vocal carry us through. taking a step back up, afrobeat rounds off the ep, made with a solid toolkit of afro-centric samples.

burly, uk-styled rave tackle from berlin’s phon.o for tectonic after spending the last few years exploring subsets of garage-techno on 50 weapons. clearly carving towards tectonic’s ruder ‘floor criteria, he plays out the dank, shadow-boxing 2-step drums and swooping subs of mercurial next to the aggier grime slap of u8 phunk for the berlin scallies, and yokes some splintered breaks into a submerged jungle-techno chassis with bell blender.

italian artist fabio monesi has been busy these years working hard in the studio while also running the wilson records label among his other production projects. here we get three tracks of no nonsense party jams sure to burn the floor. from acid storm to palladium, all bases are covered on this ep with big basslines, punching acid and well placed samples chopped just right for you and all your dj needs.

the force known as 33.10.3402 has built a cult following in certain circles through the years with his adventerous production approach and execution. with numerous releases on labels such as esp institute, kunstkopf, and most recently second circle we now see his appearence for the first time on l.i.e.s. 33.10.3402 perfectly balances his sound and presentation with this three track effort where we hear tones and rhythms that can go from baleric to metal beat in the blink of an eye. with looming clouds clearing for the light of day and then back again, these tracks sonically play with the emotions and serve equally as dancefloor cuts or for home listening bugout sessions.

terence fixmer his known in the late 90s , early 2000s as the creator of the tbm, described as techno body music. a mixture of the ebm soundscape with the modernity of techno. his muscle machine album (including tracks lile electrostatic, body pressure) released in 2001 became a reference of the genre. in 2003, musician terence fixmer and legendary singer from cultissism band nitzer ebb, douglas j mccarthy embarked on a project that spearheaded the fusion of techno and ebm. they named it fixmer/mccarthy and they were the precursor to a new breed of techno artists that manage to traverse between an array of scene specific genres without being tied to any. since releasing their first album, >between the devil<, in 2003 terence and douglas have ridden the line between pure techno and the recognizable song structure of classic electronic music and ebm. now, with over 13 years working together for this project and playing around the world, they return to their signature raw sound and delivery. >so many lies< is quintessential and brooding techno, while the instinct mix epitomizes their ability to craft a catchy bubbling baseline whilst all the while dispatching cold steel aggression.

red ember records is still legendary in certain circles despite shutting up shop 15 years ago. after some time out of the public eye, though, ewan jansen himself is still very much in business, and here he is with four brand new cuts on his debut for chez damier’s inner balance label. after the appropriately pastoral intro to ‘harvest’ we dive headlong into a flurry of vibrant, detroit-influenced programming of the kind kept alive all these years by rei loci and kirk degiorgio. ‘sines of life’ takes a well-earned breather on the flip, its laid-back setting and all-enveloping bass a massage for the weary body and soul. finally the mood turns playful on ‘square dance’, the chopped, breaksy and off-key groove completely at home alongside uk technicians norken, herbert and ben nevile. it’s rare for people to stay on their game for this long but, as this ep aptly demonstrates, ewan jansen is no ordinary musician.

ontal series is back with it’s second (ontal #2) output which includes a collaboration between dronelock and ontal called “svest” accompanied by a powerful tribal remix from the main man behind mord records - mr. bas mooy. the flipside starts with an industrial ebm track called “mehanizam” and ends with “lesion”, an acid techno/noise mutation that ontal performed in their live sets for the past few years.

forecast label announces new vinyl ep -holysheep- by cheaper shepherd to be released in march 2016. samples, drum machines and old school keyboards: a straight ­to ­the point! cheaper shepherd is a duo of producers born in the 15th borough of paris. drived by their love of synthetizers and other analogic machines, they ve been working in electronic music for years. in addition to their own projects, they have produced several hip­hop, house and techno projects: timä, androma (savoir faire), la direction, dudmode, peterbär... their first ep origin came out on helpme records early 2013, followed by three other eps, released on their own label baldwin records among others. they joined the booking roster of forecast label in 2012, and released on vinyl their first ep for the label. this projects appears as the fulfillment of a collaboration that has allowed them to go on tour in france (paris, bordeaux, lyon and st malo) but also in china. in 2015, they also went to the us to record with cans. the project was originally an ep of five songs, but the chemistry was such that it has turned into a 17 tracks album that will be released in 2016, between old school hip hop, house music and trap... limited to 200 copies !

when we started heist a few years back, our idea was to give a stage to talent in a same way as we have had a helping hand by the labels that have supported us from the beginning. therefore, i’s our pleasure to share this release with you by newcomers ouer, a berlin based duo with only a handful of tracks out so far on their self released debut last year. their approach to producing is very much jam based, and with a compact collection of synths, drum machines and a fair level of distortion, they succeed in creating their own sound with hints of classic electronic music from chicago and detroit. theres a nice mix of energy on the whole ep, the ascent being the most driving track of the package. fans of classics mcde tracks will love show off with its dreamy dx7 style chords and cracking acid lines. move over feels like a jam session that was way too much fun with some lovely solo work on the synths, whereas mess around goes down in similar free-ride style on the synths and again, has some lovely sampling going on. an impressive ep were just all too happy to have on our label. sincerely yours, lars & maarten

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ‘rojus’, that linus told me translated as ‘paradise’. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named ‘designed to dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016

this vinyl ep is a collaboration between paris label correspondant and germanys gomma records. remixes by los angeles finest psychedelic electronic producer secret circuit (beats in space records) and german shooting star lauer (partner of gerd janson at tuff city kids). why this ep? gomma has a long history with the paris scene. mathias munk modica who runs gomma (and sublabel toy tonics) has been living in france for many years. he worked with many parisian artists from dj chloe (on munks first album aperitivo 2004) to the ed banger crew or black strobe. probably apart of berlin there is no city in the world that saw more gomma events than paris. seems only a project with jennifer cardini missed. so jennifer invited mathias last year to send over tracks. decision was made fast. and so wurlitzer wank and the bösus bounce have come up on correspondant.

despite of his young age french artist jan hendez has already released quite a lot of good records. his tunes came out on labels like kina and early dub and have gained excellent reputation in the whole electronic scene. the bordeaux based dj and producer is working with his machines since more than eight years now. hendez plays regularly in all important venues in france. his debut for tabla consists of four strong tunes that are constantly cruising from techno to house and on to micro-house. be surprised!

after 19 years in the game, techno veteran jens lowtec kuhn is still going strong. while he s recently been in a nostalgic mood as reissues of early material prove kuhn is still capable of producing fresh, high quality material. there s much to enjoy about this first ep for new malmo label blundar, from the loud tape hiss, spooky melodies and weirdo ambient dub intent of track 2, to the moody, early autechre throb of skam-ish closer track 4. dancefloor-minded thrills come in the shape of hypnotic opener track 1 all unsettling, one-note chords, restless rhythms and distant electronics and the hard-topigeonhole madness of the schizophrenic track 3

fumiya tanaka has been regarded as one of the legendary dj/artists in techno over 20 years. he has been doing numerous projects such as his private label torema records, op.disc (co-running with yoshihiro hanno aka radiq), he run his own label called sundance and his famous party chaos (in tokyo and osaka). and through his long running career, he has been successfully expressing the possibilities of music. the long awaited full length album by fumiya tanaka.

limited repress of the first release! played by raresh for six years nervmusic has been the instigator of actions that have brought a circle of techno culture fans together to form an independent movement in moscow s nightlife. all along the way, the members of nervmusic were searching for a unique sound that eventually necessitated becoming a music label. the starting point of the nervmusic label will be karen ep, a release by easy changes (foundsound, stock5), a techno act from moscow and core members of nervmusic since the beginning. with a remix by cabanne (minibar, hello?repeat, perlon), the legendary french techno producer who crafted a special take on the track gneedos. further development of nervmusic will be a contiuous research in avant garde techno sounds. nervmusic aims to infuse the work of new artists with the contributions of legendary producers.

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!
